Type 310S is an austenitic chromium-nickel stainless steel that has excellent oxidation resistance at higher temperatures. This alloy resists oxidation or scaling up to 2000°F Strength at elevated temperatures is similar to the other 18-8 types so stresses at elevated temperatures should be kept low. Corrosion resistance at room temperature is better than Type 304 due to its higher chromium and nickel content. This alloy is non-magnetic in the annealed condition and non-hardenable by heat treatment.

Applications

N/A This alloy is used where good corrosion resistance as well as heat resistance are required, especially where welding is required during fabrication. Widely used for furnace applications particularly where temperatures get as high as 2000°F. Typical applications would be furnace parts, boiler baffles, fire box plates, oven linings, and furnace boxes.

Resistance to Scaling

N/A This alloy has excellent resistance to scaling up to 2100°F in continuous service and 2000°F in intermittent service.

Machinability

N/A Type 310S has a machinability rating of approximately 36% with 1212 rated 100%. Surface cutting speed in turning operations is approximately 60 feet per minute. Due to its work hardening characteristics increased feeds and slower speeds are usually beneficial.

Weldability

N/A Easily welded and brazed by all methods.

Forging

N/A Forge using intial temperature of 2000°F to 2250°F. Do not forge below 1800°F.

Annealing

N/A Annealing range is between 1900°F and 2100°F Cool rapidly.
Water should be used for heavier sections, air for lighter sections.
